Essential Navigation and Seamanship

This RYA course offers a great introduction to navigation and safety awareness for new, inexperienced or rusty skippers and crew. In fact it’s for anyone interested in sailing, motor boating, sea angling or diving, and works well in complementing our on-the-water training, such as the Start Yachting and Competent Crew courses.

Day Skipper Theory

RYA Day Skipper is a comprehensive introduction to cruising for inexperienced skippers. This course equips you with enough knowledge to navigate around familiar waters by day. A basic knowledge of lights is also included to introduce you to night cruising. The course is taught over 40 hours with two exam papers. We teach it as a series of evening sessions, or as an intensive week-long course.

Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore Theory

This RYA course is advanced training for more experienced skippers building on the Day Skipper course or equivalent. This is an advanced course that equips you to navigate safely on coastal and offshore passages. It allows some time for revision of the basics and then moves on to advanced navigation techniques.

Celestial Navigation and World-wide Meteorology

This RYA course is a course in astro-navigation and worldwide meteorology which also reveals the mysteries of the sextant. It assumes a good working knowledge of the subjects covered in the other shorebased courses.

During the course there will be ample opportunity to have ‘hands-on’ with several types of high-quality professional sextants – Tamaya and Cassens & Plath. We will all do a meridian passage of the sun to determine latitude…
