Last week we had a full house on a Day Skipper/Competent Crew Combined course. Weather was quite a bit cooler than normal but thanks to the good spirit and pizzaz of those aboard (plus our furnance) there were no problems. Lots of sailing and sailing drills. A fun week.
Coming up is a 5 day Yachtmaster Prep week followed by exams. Successful Candidates will earn their RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence, recognized world wide.
Well … we just finished a RYA Coastal Skipper course the last week of May. It started with winter and ended with summer. It’s a good thing we had a furnace.
The rest of June is full. Next week we have a full RYA Day Skipper course followed by two sets of RYA Yachtmaster Offshore prep weeks and Yachtmaster Offshore Exams. A third set of Yachtmaster prep and Exams, in August just filled up today. There may be a fourth – If there is to be a fourth, it will be set up in early October.
We still have room on 2 Coastal Skipper/RYA Mileage building trips – one from Chester to Souris, PEI and the other from the Iles Magdalens in Quebec back to Chester.
We are ready for a full season of sail training. Upgrades to the training vessel ‘Michaela’ this year are:
- a new ISO9650-1 offshore liferaft
- a new hydraulic autopilot
- a new holding tank
The first course starts May 27 – a RYA Coastal Skipper course. June is pretty full, with only one opening – a spot on a Yachtmaster prep week and exam on June 24-30. Who wants it?
Some of the current class in Astro Navigation, the RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Theory course, practiced some sun sights today at Peggy’s Cove NS. Sarah and Austin are attempting to see if Peggy’s Cove is still in Nova Scotia….
Discovery Sailing is pleased to announce we are an Official Affiliate to Spirit of Canada Ocean Challenges. We are going to give away a free trip on the Volvo 60 Amer Sports One to a lucky person that books a course with us in 2013. Amer Sports One is owned and operated by Spirit of Canada Ocean Challenges. The ocean passages they make will provide the ultimate in ocean sailing. This trip is of course be subject to availability as some trips will be full. See http://spiritofcanada.net for a schedule of their passages.
The course started last evening at Shining Water Marina with a full house. It is a good group – and there is a *lot* of experience in the room. I’m really looking forward to working with them.
Well, the four days of the Halifax boat show are over. What a busy time. Lots of former students dropped by – was great to re-connect! We took bookings for RYA courses Essential Navigation and Seamanship, Competent Crew, Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Prep and Exams. All and all, a busy and rewarding time! Thanks to Mark and Sharon for all the help.
